When Ahmed, was referred to Concrete's Cheshire East team in January 2025, he was starting over.
After fleeing conflict in his home country, he arrived in the UK facing a language barrier, financial difficulties and the lasting impact of trauma. Arabic was his first language, he had little understanding of the benefits system and few people around him to turn to for support.
But despite everything he'd been through, Ahmed was determined to build a better future.
A Fresh Start
Ahmed moved into supported accommodation and began working closely with our Floating Support Team.
We helped him get set up with Universal Credit, understand how the system works and put a plan in place to manage his finances. We supported him to register with a GP, access wellbeing support and enrol on ESOL classes so he could improve his English and feel more confident navigating everyday life.
As his confidence grew, so did his independence.
When Ahmed was ready to move on, we helped him gather the documents needed for a tenancy application and worked with housing providers to secure a place he could call his own. We also helped him access funding for furniture and essential household items so he could start building a home, not just move into a property.
Overcoming Barriers
Like many people experiencing homelessness, Ahmed's journey wasn't straightforward.
Financial pressures, rent arrears and insecure work all created challenges along the way. Together, we worked through them. Over several months, Ahmed cleared the majority of his arrears and we secured additional funding to clear the remainder.
The result was a huge turning point.
Ahmed's housing priority increased and, just two months later, he moved into his own flat. Better still, he was able to pay four weeks' rent upfront using money he had earned himself.
For someone who had arrived in the UK with very little, it was a moment he was incredibly proud of.
More Than Just a Roof Over His Head
Today, Ahmed is living independently in a home he's proud of.
He's managing his bills, speaking confidently with his landlord when repairs are needed and continuing to work while looking for more secure employment.
He's also continued learning English, completing ESOL courses and building friendships through college. The isolation he felt when he first arrived has been replaced by a growing support network and a sense of belonging.
Making Homelessness History
Ahmed's story shows what's possible when people are given the right support at the right time.
Through determination, resilience and practical support from Concrete and local partners, Ahmed has gone from homelessness and uncertainty to stability, independence and hope for the future.
Because homelessness isn't just about finding someone a roof over their head. It's about helping them rebuild their confidence, regain their independence and create a future they can believe in.
