When David first came to Concrete’s supported living scheme in Stoke-on-Trent, he’d been living on the streets, was vulnerable, exhausted, and struggling to manage day-to-day life.
Years of instability, combined with memory difficulties caused by a health condition, made independent living almost impossible. On top of this, David was also living with schizophrenia, which made him even more at risk of exploitation.
The team quickly realised that David needed more than just a roof over his head. His health issues meant he was at high risk of being cuckooed, where others take advantage of someone’s vulnerability, often using their home for criminal activity like drug dealing.
He was also easily influenced by others around him who were using drugs or alcohol. Without proper support, David could have quickly ended up back in danger.
The team stepped in to create a personalised support package, one that focused on helping David stay safe and giving him structure day to day. They helped him manage his money, made sure he had access to food, and often went with him to collect essentials so he wouldn’t be targeted or taken advantage of.
This hands-on support meant David could start to feel secure and regain a sense of independence, with people he trusted watching out for him.
The next step was finding somewhere better suited to David’s needs. The team worked closely with Adult Social Care, pushing to make sure his additional support needs were recognised and that he could access the right kind of housing.
Their persistence paid off. David was offered a place in a 24/7 supported home, a safe environment where trained staff are always available to help manage his care, health, and wellbeing.
Now, David is settled and thriving. His new home gives him the stability and structure he needs, surrounded by people who understand his challenges and know how to support him. He’s safer, healthier, and finally has a home that truly meets his needs.
The team couldn’t be prouder. David’s story is a powerful example of what happens when support is personal, persistent, and compassionate.
At Concrete, that’s what we do best, we see the person, and for David, that’s made all the difference.
